Many days full of magic, surprise and inspiration have passed. Super Teresa came to help finishing off the sowing and mulching of the last of the three swales - fantastic job! The swales fill up more and for longer with each rain, and all seeds have sprouted and the cover crop is growing vigorously! Then beautiful Nico joined us and the mushrooms hunt started 🙏 Abundance of edible wild mushrooms from the forest keeps us wanting to explore our connection with each tree, each plant, each den, each insect and, of course, each mushroom! 🍁 What a joy to feast on them cooked on a bonfire! ... and to write down our dreams, share them and burn them in the fire? Unforgettable... It's not so easy to put in words the depth of the experience of being out in the forest, meeting deers, badgers, eagles, spotting boars' tracks and feeling so replenished, at home, safe. And yet nature keeps providing. Harvesting firewood every day for the upcoming colder days. On this note we only harvest wood that has already been cut and left behind by 'forest management interventions' or from fallen trees after last years heavy storms. No need to fell trees around here for few years :) And last but not least the spectacle each day gifts us with at sunset. ~ Long day, many rocks, opening the #Earth No tears from the sky ~ One day, three #swales (each approx 40m long, 1.5m wide, 50cm deep) Why? - To harvest #rainwater and passively irrigate what will soon become a Food Forest. To soak as much winter rain into the ground and store it as long as possible during the summer months. Looking forward for the first rains to observe the swales in function Next step? - Sowing ground cover, nitrogen fixing and dynamic accumulating plants We are transforming a degraded and compacted field into a self-maintaining #ecosystem rich in #biodevirsity. Now that this big job is done and paid, another big job is on the way: propagating and buying shrubs and trees. Any little help is highly appreciated. Today three generations got together for the sake of #love , stacking and storing the winter stock of #firewood for our hamlet's elder, Guerrino!
